We are recruiting a Business Development Manager, Defence for the UK to support the growth of Bechtel’s business supporting the effective delivery of major capital projects for the UK ministry of defence. Bechtel is looking to secure growth in the UK based on both our established track record in the United States, particular in nuclear security and current delivery in the UK where we are engaged supporting the UK nuclear deterrent at both Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) and Devonport Royal Dockyard.

Position Summary
We’re looking for an experienced Defence Business Development Manager to join Bechtel and become a key leader within our business development team. This role will lead on building relationships with all defence customers across the UK including the Ministry of Defence and AWE, developing propositions to bring to market and leading on specific prospects to secure new work. Business Development Managers in Bechtel are also responsible for working within our global matrix structure to gain buy-in to pursue key prospects and leverage required capabilities. This role will be required to work in coordination with Bechtel’s global defence sector lead and will draw on existing capabilities within the UK & Ireland region, including our proposal team.
Typical Responsibilities
Developing the UK Defence business, setting clear objectives against which progress can be measured;
Owning the UK Defence strategy and delivering against the business plan in both the private and public sector;
Developing Bechtel’s UK Defence proposition, drawing on the wider Bechtel Defence offering and track record, responding to emerging challenges in the market such as competitor changes and net zero requirements;
Owning the development of key prospects and acting as champion internally to secure support and draw on Bechtel’s global capabilities and resources;
Developing relevant networks across the entire sector, identifying and nurturing relationships with key decision makers and influencers;
Identifying and engaging with potential business partners to secure and develop innovative approaches and individual propositions to customer and market challenges;
Building Bechtel’s position in the UK private and public sector defence sector through broader marketing activity, thought leadership and conference speaking/attendance;
Leading on development of proposals and pitches for target prospects,
Development of commercial strategy and pricing for individual prospects
Negotiating and closing opportunities
Skills and Qualifications
You’ll have strong experience working as a BD leader and a proven track record in developing new client relationships, winning work and closing deals. You will also have a good understanding of the UK defence market and possess mature relationships within the sector. Specifically, you will have:
A demonstrable track record as a sales leader, overseeing significant client engagements, developing and delivering a business plan and securing internal support across the immediate and wider business
Ability to sell Bechtel’s value proposition, execution approach and commercial offering to customers based on a deep understanding of defence sector operating requirements and major project delivery
Ability to develop new propositions and to work with customers to shape potential prospects, including the ability to develop creative solutions and “connect dots†through disparate information
Ability to listen and understand customer challenges, supporting their early stage thinking and applying a collaborative approach to customer relationships
Skill in oral and written communication with demonstrated ability in making presentations to customers and management and the ability to create effective, tailored pitches to market Bechtel to potential customers and communicate our proposition.
The ability to champion deals both internally and externally with sufficient commercial and contractual/legal knowledge to explore options and solutions with both. This will include the ability to be articulate and concise in describing the deal and associated risk and benefits.
Knowledge of preparation of win plans, pre-positioning, targeting, pursuit and capture of strategic prospects.
The ability to engage effectively internally within Bechtel as the advocate for a prospect.
Experience in management, supervision, and personnel administration functions, including selection and training of personnel.
