Job Description
Overview of Role
In Business Architecture at TfL we develop and articulate a holistic view of our business and technology across business areas, partners and customers. We help describe business strategies, inform key investment decision-making and aid understanding of TfL’s business environment, the business outcomes to be realised, and the technology investment required to enable them.
You will be working within the Business Architecture team in ‘Technology & Data – Surface’ and will report to the Senior Business Architect for Surface. You will provide direct support to specific business areas and investment sponsors. You will use common frameworks to develop and advise on integrated and fit-for-purpose technology and business initiatives that deliver and enable required outcomes for TfL.
You will also provide leadership on the architecture of the business capabilities, processes and information that technology will enable. You will interface closely with Product Managers and architecture and design colleagues to ensure alignment between the architectures and roadmaps for business, application, technology and data, that support the efficient delivery of T&D products.
We are looking for someone who has ability to see the bigger picture and has a desire to holistically shape TfL’s projects and operations rather than necessarily someone who is already an experienced Business Architect.

- Develop and maintain current-state, roadmap, and future-state business architecture views and artefacts for specific business areas and business capabilities.
- Provide subject matter expertise and business knowledge insight informing T&D strategies to ensure that T&D’s direction, services, capabilities and product developments integrate and optimally deliver business outcomes.
- Provide specific business insight to the Product Management community, ensuring business architectures are consulted when developing product roadmaps.
- Provide architectural assurance, support and guidance across T&D to ensure that programmes and projects deliver integrated business and technology solutions.
Skills
- A compelling communicator able to clearly convey concepts, proposals and analysis to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Highly effective at analysing and synthesising information from a wide array of stakeholders and sources into cohesive architectures that accurately represent current and desired future states.
- A highly-adept modeller/visualiser able to articulate complex concepts into effective mediums from which multiple stakeholders can derive clear direction and points of integration
- Good level of personal resiliency, able to solve problems and provide confident direction during times of uncertainty and change.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to understand different perspectives and positively influence decision-making.
Knowledge
- Educated to a degree level or equivalent (post-graduate qualifications in related fields desirable).
- TOGAF and/or BIZBOK certification preferable.
- Thorough knowledge of architectural design principles and the relationship between business architecture and related data, application, and technology domains.
- Broad knowledge of project and programme delivery methodologies (e.g. MSP, Agile, SCRUM or PRINCE 2) with detailed understanding of design authority responsibilities.
- Broad knowledge of Transport industry operational models.
Experience – demonstrable experience of at least some of the following;
- Delivering business reference architectures and other associated artefacts to major business transformation programmes in a large, complex and operationally-focussed organisation.
- Carrying out design authority duties or related assurance role within major transformation programmes.
- Using formal frameworks, processes and standards (eg. BIZBOK, TOGAF, Lean Six Sigma).
- Developing enterprise Business Architecture including, but not limited to, Business Modelling, Business Capability Mapping and Value Steam Modelling.
- Developing solution Business Architecture including, but not limited to, Target Operating Models and Business Motivational Modelling.
- One or more technical/architecture domains (data, technology and/or applications) as well as Business Architecture.
- Showing the value of a structured and integrated Business Architecture approach to drive out efficiencies and realise financial benefits.
