Position Summary:

Improve overall Boston Whaler product quality by working closely with all Boston Whaler team members to drive quality at the source, and minimize resources required to achieve manufacturing goals with optimal quality levels.

Roles & Responsibilities:

Perform in-process and final product quality checks. Document and track results. Lead initiatives to reduce quality defects, and variance labor and materials associated with rework and scrap. Communicate nonconformities to line personnel, team leaders, and VS Leaders—work with team to identify root cause of issues and assist with leading action to resolve. Document & facilitate employee training for work instructions, quality standards and expectations, inspection methods, boundary samples, poke yoke solutions, best practices, and other quality related initiatives. Research product improvement opportunities and recommend or submit ECR/ECN’s to improve product quality and customer satisfaction. Work closely with Boston Whaler Quality Manager, and Boston Whaler Customer Service and Warrant Department to provide real time feedback to VS team of manufacturing issues coming from our dealers and customers, as well as with Engineering on current product enhancement opportunities, model year enhancements, and new product improvements. Coach/ Mentor employees in Safety related procedures and best practices. Participate in new product integration by working with product integration teams, as well as new product core teams. Assist in the development of Lean initiatives, such as 5S, standard work, kanban, etc. Assist VS in schedule attainment by pitching in when needed and performing manufacturing related job tasks when called upon. Conduct on water testing and evaluation of all Boston Whaler models. This includes new product testing during integration period of product launch. Conduct NMMA Compliance audits of all Boston Whaler models. Report and track findings, as well as implement corrective actions, and provide scheduled updates to sustain. This includes working very closely with Boston Whaler Compliance Specialist, BBG Compliance representatives, and Boston Whaler Compliance Team. Must follow proper procedures in the safe handling of hazardous wastes, which may be generated during the manufacturing process.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Education:                  Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent.
    • Prefer college level coursework.
  • Criteria:                       Candidates must have received Mentor designation.
    • Must be in good standing in attendance and discipline.
  • Experience: 1-2 years of boat manufacturing experience
    • 1 year of boat assembly experience
    • Demonstrated knowledge of boat systems (mechanical and electrical)
    • Must be able to read blueprints and process procedures
      • Boat operation and on-water troubleshooting
    • PC based software experience helpful (Excel, Word)
    • Understanding of principles of Lean Manufacturing helpful
  • Below qualifications must be attained within 6-18 Months of starting position:
  • NMMA (National Marine Manufactures Assoc.) Standards Compliance Certification (Internal certification by Eric Skaggs)

Includes:  Battery test / install A/C electrical D/C Electrical Navigation Lights

  • Ventilation systems
  • Ability to navigate and water test large boat (over 33’)
  • Certification on large boat fork-lift
  • Able to safety launch and retrieve boat at dock (launch with trailer)
  • Capable of testing and running generators, A/C systems, and electronics
  • Willing to become certified in travel lift operation 
  • Safe boating certification or willing to obtain
  • Below qualifications must be attained within 12-24 Months of starting position:
  • ABYC Certification in one of the following (or willing to obtain within 12-24 months):
    • ABYC Standards
    • ABYC Marine Electrical
    • ABYC Basic Marine Electrical
    • ABYC Marine Gas engines and Support Systems Certification

      Other Requirements:

  • Self-starter, high-energy individual who can work effectively with little supervision
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong desire to focus on continuous improvement opportunities and work diligently to implement.
  • Willingness to:
    • Learn inspection processes related to all Boston Whaler manufacturing departments
    • Work in an environment with fiberglass and dust particles
  • Position requires standing for 10+hr shift
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
