As part of their digital transformation strategy, VirginMediaO2 has established an Automation Centre of Excellence (CoE) to execute the automation of their customer-facing and back-office processes. These business processes must be executed faster with the aid of Automation toolsets, with accuracy and in some cases, in real time to support end-to-end digital customer journeys. The Automation CoE is responsible for the automation of VirginMediaO2 processes to support this strategic initiative.
From this perspective, the Automation CoE is a critical capability which will enable the business to transform its business model and support digitisation and vast operational efficiencies.
About the role
The Automation Scrum Master does anything possible to help the multiple Automation CoE delivery teams to perform at their highest level. This involves removing any impediments to progress, co-ordinating daily project tasks, facilitate daily stand-up meetings, and working with the relevant stakeholders to ensure delivery activities are co-ordinated with appropriate resources.
The role is integral in supporting the delivery of the Automation CoE delivery factory as well as ensuring that each of the projects emerging from the Automation development pipeline are ready to enter the development phases. The Automation Scrum Master will ensure all relevant documentation is adhered to against the appropriate O2 Automation technical standards and governance processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Facilitate sprint planning, retrospectives, and sprint demos for each of the Automation projects
- Assist the Product Owner with refining and managing the product backlog
- Assessing the Scrum maturity of the team and organization and coaching the team to higher levels of maturity, at a pace that is sustainable and comfortable for the team and organization
- Maintain relevant metrics that help the team see how they are performing against the estimated delivery timescales
- Ensure each of the individual Automation projects are organised ahead of development timeline ensuring all pre-requisite activities are in place
- Removing impediments or guiding the team to remove impediments by finding the right personnel to take ownership of resolution
- Ensure all impediments and risks are maintained (in Jira) and escalated to the Automation Programme Manager at appropriate timescales
- Building a trusting and safe environment where problems can be raised without fear of blame, retribution, or being judged, with an emphasis of healing and problem solving
- Facilitating getting the work done without coercion, assigning, or dictating the work.
- Facilitating discussion, decision making, and conflict resolution
- Assisting with internal and external communication, improving transparency, and radiating information
- Providing all support to the team using a servant leadership style and leading by example. This person should personify Scrum and Agile
- Set goals, define roles, and produce schedules of tasks
- Plan for deployment after testing is complete
- Manage the project and responsible for timely completion of development
- Communicate with both the business users and service delivery team(s) for automation handover and appropriate documentation
- Support the governance process by ensuring all relevant artefacts are produced in a timely manner to present to the Automation Design Authority
- Publish completed documentation for the automated processes
- Prepare, along with the Automation Programme Manager, the necessary resources to support each of the Automation projects – ensuring also that each of the third-party delivery and support partners are informed with adequate timescales
- Track the project's progress and report project status
- Monitor the current project, its successes, and its failures, to be taken in the next cycle for its improvement
- Evaluate successes and challenges to enhance learning for next automation project (Retrospective)
What We Need from You:
Essential Skills:
- Proven experience of leading and managing technical teams
- Strong technical background whilst understanding the business value that technologies bring to a business
- Experience playing the Scrum Master role for a software development team
- Knowledge of numerous well documented patterns and techniques for filling in the intentional gaps left in the Scrum approach (example: numerous Burndown techniques, numerous Retrospective formats, handling bugs, etc)
- Awareness and experience with widely successful Agile techniques: User Stories, ATDD, TDD, Continuous Integration, Continuous Testing, Pairing, Automated Testing
- Constantly aware of new technologies and how they can bring value to the delivery and testing phases of the Automation projects
- Knowledge of managing projects, budgets, and multi-disciplinary project teams
- Strong stakeholder management skills, used to dealing with senior managers
- Excellent communication, influencing, negotiation and relationship-building skills; ability to build consensus within and across a diverse organization
- Knowledge and experience of Automation toolsets (primarily BluePrism)
