The Associate Director, Strategic Initiatives is a member of the Sourcing Excellence R&D team.  This role serves as a strategic partner (or ‘liaison’) to the procurement senior leadership team and is responsible for driving high impact / strategic procurement initiatives within Research & Development. As a ‘liaison’, the AD, Strategic Initiatives Team member is expected to provide a value chain perspective across the entire R&D functional portfolio and coach (e.g., peer review) leaders on key procurement processes / capabilities (e.g., Supply Plans, Category Strategies & Roadmaps, Contract to Pay enablement).

Additionally, each team member acts as a portfolio manager for R&D, in order to ensure appropriate prioritization and value opportunities are realized. This role is intended to bring a high degree of flexibility to our resource model from a strategic capacity perspective leading strategic initiative, enhancing strategic capabilities, and identifying cross-category opportunities for value delivery.

Major Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

Lead and / or support major functional or enterprise-wide strategic programs within a multi-year plan including end-2-end process, make/buy analysis and recommendations

  • Responsible for supporting value creation and delivery, end-to-end across the value chain, and business strategy development while engaging as a strategic partner.

  • Leading procurement and supply management activities for multiple areas of spend within R&D categories with the goal of driving substantial value realization efforts in all forms – revenue generation, cost reductions and productivity improvements while maintaining or improving quality and service levels.

  • Works closely with key stakeholders in business units and in corporate functions to develop/execute effective cost reduction strategies and implementation plans.

Serve as a strategic partner (or ‘liaison’) to the R&D procurement leadership team and the R&D sourcing excellence leadership team

  • Ensure connectivity between center lead BPS(Business Partner & Strategy function) initiatives and sourcing excellence leadership team

  • Act as Business Performance Monitoring Lead for key deliverables in R&D Functional area

  • Support an emerging future pipeline of Continuous Improvement deliverables

  • Effectively manage R&D SE and BPS SE teams through strategic planning and goal development in accordance with SS&P strategy

  • Support strategic programs and end-to-end process optimization efforts

  • Develop and educate procurement team members about the SE process, standards and capabilities

  • Ensure strategic alignment with SE and BPS partners

  • Develop approaches for implementing the SE strategy and capabilities that is complimentary to existing R&D operations and not disruptive to the business

  • Create a plan to execute the build of each capability

Act as a portfolio manager for a given function, in order to ensure appropriate prioritization and value opportunities are realized

  • Drive/Support the high impact / strategic procurement initiatives with the goal of driving substantial value realization efforts in all forms – revenue generation, cost reductions and productivity improvements while maintaining or improving product quality and supplier service levels

  • Lead highly complex strategic sourcing efforts in specific R&D category areas as necessary/appropriate

  • Champion ideas that will drive innovation, optimize BMS total cost of ownership for spend categories, and support an emerging future pipeline of Continuous Improvement deliverables

  • Primary responsibility is to champion and secure total cost of ownership (TCO) value realization for all designated Category Teams and spend categories, drive innovation in the supply chain, lead and/or support major strategic programs including end-2-end process and leading insource/outsource recommendations and to institutionalize these processes across the team

Coach and oversee development of key capabilities (e.g., Business Partnering, Strategic Category Management, Source-to-Pay & SRM processes) for a given function to ensure consistency and quality

  • Provide a value chain perspective across the entire R&D functional portfolio

  • Oversee/support the development and execution of category strategies to drive innovation into the category and supplier management processes

  • Ensure collaboration between key stakeholders in business units and in corporate functions to develop effective cost reduction strategies and implementation plans.

  • Ensure sourcing strategies are implemented and TCO reductions are secured according to forecasts.

  • Lead and/or support major strategic programs within a multi-year plan including end-2-end process, make/buy analysis and recommendations within a large group of spend categories and/or within a major business area.

  • Champion and support efforts to achieve small and disadvantaged business sourcing content objectives

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:

  • B.S./B.A. (Business, Science or Engineering is desirable)

  • Minimum of 8 years of work/business experience

  • Minimum of 6-8 years of multi-disciplined procurement experience or relevant experience

  • Minimum of 3 years Pharmaceutical Procurement experience or relevant experience

  • Experience leading and participating on cross-functional and/or global teams.  Demonstrated ability as a Project Manager who can prioritize workload and manage complex projects within cost and schedule.

  • Managerial experience including managing teams of senior professionals and managers and establishing performance expectations

  • Internal stakeholder management, data/information management, category management, process redesign and continuous improvement expertise, project management and performance measurement skills

  • Procurement process knowledge, contract management, financial analysis, market analysis, supplier analysis, supplier diversity, supplier management, technology utilization, strategic planning and integrated supply chain experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • M.S./M.B.A.

  • Professional certifications (e.g. CPM, CPIM).

  • Hands on experience leading process improvement initiatives such as Six Sigma or Lean

  • 5 years Pharmaceutical Procurement experience

  • Membership in Professional Associations, e.g. ISM
