The Associate Director, Preclinical Biostatistics (ADPB) collaborates with preclinical scientists from cross-functional discovery and preclinical biomarker research teams, representing the BMS Global Biometrics and Data Sciences (GBDS) statistical community.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Independently collaborates with scientists from cross-functional discovery and preclinical biomarker research teams including, but not limited to, biologists, chemists, imaging specialists, pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic scientists, and early clinical development physicians and scientists.  Independently collaborates with the Early Clinical Biostatistics Lead and the Translational Medicine Statistics Lead in GBDS as a therapeutic candidate progresses from discovery to early clinical development.
  • Independently leads efforts on innovative, state-of-the-art, Bayesian and frequentist in vivo animal study designs and in vitro assay designs.
  • Independently plans and conducts the corresponding rigorous statistical analyses.
  • Visually summarizes results of statistical analyses providing relevant insight, interpretations, and contributions to decision making.
  • Individually or jointly with discovery scientists, communicates the experimental results, their interpretations, and research decisions, through internal and external presentations, documents, and publications.
  • Enables and contributes to quantitative strategic decision making and risk assessment in advancing therapeutic candidates through discovery to early clinical development.
  • Independently or in collaboration, may conduct statistical research targeted at solving discovery and preclinical biomarker research problems.    
  • Implements or develops statistical software programs and tools for experimental design, data analysis, simulation, and conducting research.
  • Quantitatively empowers the discovery scientists by increasing their stochastic intelligence and statistical literacy through 1-on-1 or small group mentoring, or larger applied statistical seminars.
  • Keeps up to date with state-of-the-art statistical methodology.
  • Develops expertise beyond biostatistics by reading the discovery, preclinical biomarker, and medical literature.
  • Accountable for ensuring the integrity, quality, and timeliness of all ADPB job responsibilities and functions.
  • Builds the external reputation of BMS R&D via external interactions through collaborations with alliance partners, academic and government research organizations, key opinion leaders, as reflected through professional conference participation, and publishing in the discovery, preclinical biomarker, and statistical literature.

Education / Experience:

  • Ph.D. (or equivalent) in Biostatistics, Statistics, or related field with 7+ years pharmaceutical research, development, or related experience.  
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of Bayesian and frequentist design-to-decision making strategies in pharmaceutical research, development, or related field.
  • Excellent statistical computing skills, including simulation.
  • Demonstrated efficiency with software, for example, but not limited to, some combination of:  R, RStudio, SAS, JMP, OpenBUGS, JAGS, Stan, FACTS, Spotfire, East, NQuery Advisor, and GraphPad Prism. Working knowledge of MS WORD, MS EXCEL, MS PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • A keen interest in scientific inquiry, a positive “can do” philosophy, accompanied by a high level of emotional intelligence and maturity for building effective collaborative partnerships producing impactful discovery and preclinical biomarker research.
  • Additional favored experience:
    • 1-1 or small group mentoring, larger group seminars or courses.
    • Published statistical research.
    • Published collaborative preclinical or clinical research.
    • Internal or external statistical presentations.
    • Internal or external collaborative preclinical or clinical presentations.
