MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- EHS Lead for BMS North American Office Facilities (NAOF) locations including PPK/NSP/ROS/TMA/NWC, Field Force, and other office sites as added to the Facilities Operations portfolio.
- Design, develop, implement and audit EHS programs designed to minimize employee exposure to workplace stressors. These programs include but are not limited to: Occupational Health and Safety; Driver/Fleet Safety; Environmental Permits, Ergonomics, Office Safety, Sustainability, reporting and compliance; and other initiatives.
- Work closely with Global EOHSS Commercial Business Partner as well as Fleet (Americas), Employee Relations and Legal to ensure alignment on Field Driver Safety Programs, including the selection of Fleet Vehicles.
- Play an active role in the Global Commercial EOHSS Team, ensuring collaboration with other Commercial Markets to share learnings and best practices.
- Engage with Leadership at each of the sites managed (including Field) and ensure robust engagement in EOHSS topics.
- Manage the Field EOHSS Representative Committee to ensure collaboration with Field Personnel on EOHSS programs across their Business Unit.
- Manage EHS Program interface with Integrated Facility Management (IFM) including oversight of IFM EHS Manager and other resources.
- Manage environmental and other EHS permit applications, environmental reports and sustainability efforts for NAOF sites.
- Manage the waste management program.
- Manage the Princeton Pike Wildlife Habitat Program, preparation of certification documents and develops innovative projects to enable the program and encourage employee participation.
- Manage routine deployment of site emergency response team. Act as Incident Commander and utilize incident command structure to coordinate the activities of BMS and external emergency response personnel. Provide 24/7 emergency response capability for sites.
- Interface with local regulatory agency officials. Represent BMS during inspections, audits and environmental compliance activities pertaining to the NAOF sites and other sites as needed.
- Conduct Safety and Environmental training sessions as required by BMS EHS standards and federal, state, and local regulatory requirements.
- Office Safety Program Subject Matter Expert for NAOF and other sites, monitors Corporate Directive Compliance and develops and integrates proactive regional programs.
- Assists in monitoring the efforts of consultants, service providers and contractors participating in activities with potential EHS impact.
- Provide all aspects of EHS guidance for company sponsored events (Townhalls, Social Gatherings, Walks, Races and others).
- Manage implementation of incident and near miss reporting and investigation process, including Field Force, ensures communication to appropriate management, assist in root cause determination, and implementation of necessary preventive measures to minimize recurrence.
- Manage and maintain EHS recordkeeping systems to track EHS events, Self-assessments, inspections, training, metrics, and corrective actions for NAOF and Field Force.
- Maintain OSHA logs for NAOF sites, Field Force and Regional Field Sales offices.
- Work directly with Corporate Medical with managing workers compensation cases for NAOF and Field Force, including return to work program implementation.
- Work closely with the field business units as well as Occupational Health to ensure that medical accommodations relating to Fleet Vehicles are completed.
- Manage and ensure on time submittal of applicable EHS reports for NAOF sites.
- Develop, maintain, and continuously improve standard operating procedures, and plans to help ensure continued facility and organization compliance. Ability to develop, implement & monitor EHS programs to ensure compliance with regulations, Corporate Directives and SOPs, ability to write related procedures, as well as incorporate continuous improvement activities.
- Conduct EHS program audits and inspections according to applicable established audit practices; review audit reports, communicates audit results, develops, and tracks remedial actions and action plans to promote the sustainability of the company and assure compliance.
- Maintain liaison with Facilities, Engineering and operating departments to facilitate design and implementation of site projects with EHS impacts.
- Anticipate and develop plans to address emerging EHS trends, directives, and regulations.
- Provide input to federal and state regulators through trade associations and industry groups for the writing and revision of regulations as appropriate.
- Demonstrated capability in managing multiple projects/tasks, effectively prioritizing tasks, communicating project/task status and ensuring timely closure of assignments.
- Maintain all EHS records, including exposure monitoring, and generate reports as required.
- Develop safety and related objectives, standards and programs for compliance with new and changing regulatory (OSHA, IBC, etc.) and company requirements.
- This position requires onsite presence and availability to travel between sites and to out of state sites as needed.

- Elevates concerns and recommended solutions to management in a timely manner (Compliance and Regulatory Expertise)
- Creates proactive plans, programs and processes for audits and gap analyses, and presents results to site business partners to assist in improving compliance (Audit Expertise)
- Takes leadership role in dealing with complex or sensitive situations, and institutes preventive measures at the site(s). (Incident Investigation and Prevention)
- Develops and implements sound and innovative methods to utilize EHS recordkeeping programs to develop business improvements for both legal/regulatory and governance/stakeholder issues across the site(s). (Reporting, Documentation and Recordkeeping)
- Strong oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated capabilities in effective negotiations, influencing, advocacy and presentations to all employee and management levels. Strengths in customer service and cooperative teaming.
- Develops programs and systems and identifies key performance indicators which measure the success of innovative approaches to complex regulatory, technical, and business strategies. (EHS Program and Management System Development and Maintenance)
- Selects and manages outside vendors to ensure effectiveness and value. (Project and Contract Management)
- Develops and executes budgets, fosters internal and external relationships, and communicates EHS strategy to align resources, management and stakeholders. (Business Understanding and Partnership)
- Identifies and communicates current and potential EHS risk factors and leads the development and implementation of risk reduction plans for the site(s). (Risk Assessment and Management)
EXPERIENCES DESIRED
- 8-10 years’ experience in an EHS leadership role.
- Demonstrated understanding of and ability to communicate effectively with regulatory authorities, government officials, major customers, and senior executives within the organization.
- Life & Fire Safety, Office Safety, Ergonomics, Indoor Air Quality, Walking & Working Surfaces and Fleet Safety management experience.
- Experience creating and managing a budget including resource allocation and priority setting
- Successful leadership and hands-on direction of EHS issues in major operating facilities and business functions that support divisional projects
- Experience responding to medical emergencies, odor concerns, spills, alarms and other events.
- Experience in a globally and technically diverse workplace
- Experience dealing with the complexities of the pharmaceutical/healthcare industry
- Demonstrated ability to develop, motivate and direct teams in a matrix organization
- Experienced at developing and implementing customer-focused services and programs.
KNOWLEDGE DESIRED
- Four-year College or advanced degree in environment, health, or safety science or engineering with 5 to 7 years working experience with a broad spectrum of construction and service vendor related activities. Board certification in one or more aspects of these disciplines is preferred.
- Expertise in relevant regional or national EHS regulations and standards
- Understanding of large organizational systems and structure, operating culture, and effective organizational work styles, including pharmaceutical/healthcare manufacturing environments
- Understanding of finance principles, budgeting processes and prioritizing resources
- Proven ability to develop proactive programs with the judgment and skill to implement in a timely fashion is critical. Requires proven leadership ability with good interpersonal skills to effectively respond to emergencies, rapidly changing situations, deadlines, or working conditions.
- Ability to work independently and with all levels of management and diverse employee populations to develop effective EHS programs is essential. A self-directed individual with the ability to lead and work with multi-functional teams throughout the business unit is required. Requires some decision-making ability in situations with uncertainty.
- Previous experience related to the enforcement of federal and state regulations (IBC, OSHA, etc.) is desirable.
- Able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment if required.
- Working knowledge of common business software and communication applications (including Microsoft Office tools)
