Our Economics team is part of our national planning business. Our team provides the necessary intelligence and strategic insight to realize sustainable economic development. The research, advice, and thought leadership we provide helps our clients to invest in communities right across the UK, creating places people want to be a part of today and for the future. 

Recent and current commissions include: housing and employment needs advice to the local authorities in West Northamptonshire; land acquisition business case development for Homes England and major infrastructure projects; economic impact studies within town center redevelopment; new settlement strategies for the Ministry of Defence; property value uplift studies for East West Rail in Bedfordshire, and socio-economic impact assessments supporting estate renewal around London.

Alongside client and project responsibilities, you will be involved in steering the strategic direction of our team, both in how we work together and also in how we win new work through business development initiatives.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Development of a bid strategy for GL Hearn working with the Sales & Marketing Director, GL Hearn Board, and business unit directors.
  • Undertaking client, project, scope, stakeholders, and competitor research to better understand opportunities, working with colleagues from across the GL Hearn business.
  • Portal management and coordination of opportunity sharing.
  • Qualification of bid opportunities, establishing whether GL Hearn has the capability to win.
  • Ensure opportunities are managed in compliance with the established governance process, including bid governance processes, and liaising with Beale Law and others as appropriate at a sub divisional, divisional and Group level.
  • Project planning - owning the bid programme, highlighting interdependencies, and taking the lead in monitoring/reporting on progress.
  • Managing internal and external progress meetings.
  • Facilitating knowledge sharing across the business with regards bidding activity and sharing best practice.
  • Check and review the quality of bid text, editing this where necessary to ensure that it is of the highest possible quality.

What we’re looking for:

You will have a natural enthusiasm for planning and urban economics and a desire to advance your practice, knowledge, and skills base. You are likely to have 8-12 years of experience in an economic development related activity within local government or a private sector consultancy.

Membership of a suitable professional organisation, such as the Institute of Economic Development of the Royal Town Planning Institute would be preferred.

Skills and qualifications relevant to this role include:

  • Relevant qualification in economics, planning, human geography, or related discipline.
  • Demonstrable technical skills/knowledge in planning and urban economics.
  • Familiarity with land market dynamics in the commercial property sector.
  • A passion for development and promoting economic and social welfare at all spatial scales.
  • Advanced use of excel for data analysis and manipulation.
  • Production of succinct and relevant reports for the purpose of supporting plan-making and devising strategies.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrable capabilities of working within a professional team.
  • An interest in data modelling, GIS, presentation, and demographic research.
