What it's like to work here

Wallington is set in the middle of Northumberland approximately twenty miles north-west of the city of Newcastle upon Tyne. The house, at the south end of an estate which extends to nearly 13,500 acres, is surrounded by parkland and arable farmland watered by northern tributaries of the river Wansbeck. From the house the land rises to the estate village of Cambo, and then on to poorer upland grazing, peaking at Hemmel Hill in Harwood Forest (330 metres, 1083 ft) towards the north of the estate. Shaftoe Crag is prominent in southern views from the estate; to the east Rothley Crag, topped by a folly castle, guards the road to Scotland; and to the north and west are the Simonside Hills and the Cheviots. In its glorious countryside setting Wallington survives, one of the great estates of the north, owned by a single family, loved and embellished by succeeding owners for nine generations.

What you'll be doing

Wallington has a great team and is a property that moves at pace, if you have a passion for gardening and wildlife read on, this might be the opportunity for you.

Storm Arwen hit Wallington hard, the Gardens and Woodland were significant casualties. In order that Wallington fully recover from this event, we need someone like you to help us.

As a Grade 10 gardener you’ll be assisting the garden team with the tidy up operation which will include Chainsaw work as well as general gardening duties such as weeding, pruning mulching and mowing.

If you are interested in this position, we need you to be enthusiastic about gardening and have passion for learning, as mentioned above a qualification with Chainsaws would be strongly desirable.

Who we're looking for

To be successful in this role you should be able to demonstrate the following:

• Previous practical gardening/horticulture experience, as well as some knowledge of plants and horticultural techniques

• Familiarity with machinery/equipment and accompanying practical certificates

• Knowledge of Health and Safety compliance requirements

• Excellent customer service

• Willingness and enthusiasm to share the history of the garden with visitors, bringing it to life

• Commitment for what you are doing, always remaining proud of your work

• You’ll have an NVQ 1-2 in Amenity Horticulture (or equivalent).
